Rock Dove Needs You!
Dear friends,
It's a first: Rock Dove is asking for money. We've got a new project we're thrilled about and are turning to you, our community, to make it thrive and last.
THE ROCK DOVE COLLECTIVE: For those of you who don't know Rock Dove, we are a radical community health project that aims to make good, respectful, effective health resources accessible to people throughout New York. We think of health broadly as including mental, physical, sexual, emotional, spiritual, and social wellbeing, and so our work tries to help connect people with everything from dentistry to massage, low cost gynecological care to herbal medicine, trustworthy radical doctors to violence intervention.
One of our guiding principles has always been to encourage and support the use of mutual aid (barter or trade), so that in addition to accessing the best of the free and low cost clinics in the city, people can also enter into exchanges wtih each other to meet their needs and improve their lives. So I might babysit your child in exchange for a massage, or you might give me a chiropractic adjustment in exchange for a home-cooked meal. We're also deeply committed to helping develop sliding scale structures that are equally viable for both the health practitioner and the person receiving services so that we can sustain a healthy community for everyone.
Our most recent effort has been building a COMMUNITY ACUPUNCTURE PROJECT in Susnet Park, Brooklyn. This project has been an inspiring collaboration between a number of Rock Dove providers, the collective, and the Si Se Puede! Women's Cooperative. We'll tell you all about it.
SI SE PUEDE! WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE: Si Se Puede! Women's Coorperative was founded in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, in August, 2006, to bring together immigrant women to create a women-run, women-owned, eco-friendly housecleaning business. The cooperative is designed to create living wage jobs that will be done in a safe and healthy environment, as well as to provide social supports and educational opportunities for its members.
THE COMMUNITY ACUPUNCTURE PROJECT: Together, we have created a beautiful community acupuncture opportunity, where members of the Si Se Puede cooperative (and soon, members of 3 other worker cooperatives also based in Sunset Park) are able to come every Saturday from 10am-1am and receive acupuncture treatment from our fantastic practitioners in a community environment. Multiple people are treated at the same time (one new person gets treatment every 15 minutes, and people sit together while the needles are doing their work) and the services are offered at a sliding scale. This means the women are paying no more than they comfortably can, and since the acupuncturists are seeing multiple people every hour, they are also making living wages that fairly compensate them for their work and skills. We held our first clinic day several weeks ago, and our first week, 17 women received treatment, and several brought their children as well. The clinic is a bilingual, empowering and caring space.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: When we were planning the project, one of the cooperative members said: "There is so much stress on our bodies--from the physical labor we do, and things in our environment that are bad for us, and the stress of raising our families, and the health problems we may have--that we need to be thinking of new ways to take care of ourselves. So often people in our community don't have access to any health care, and they especially don't have access to different or more holistic things like acupuncture, and we know what acupuncture can do and want to make it available to our community."
The project started with a Rock Dove skill share last year, when 3 acupuncturists offered their services to a group of people, among them many members of the cooperative. Months later, when we were getting together to plan the project, one of the members said, "I wanted to start this because I had never had acupuncture before the Rock Dove workshop last year. A year before that I was in a car accident and from then on I'd had terrible migraines. Almost every day I would get one of these headaches and I would be dizzy and throwing up in the street and in so much pain. I was scared to go anywhere. Then I got acupuncture and do you know I haven't had one since? Not one. I know not everyone will have such a dramatic experience, but I believe in acupuncture, and I believe we women would benefit from it and so would our families."
All of us--the Si Se Puede members, the Rock Dove collective, and the acupuncturists see this as a project that is not just about health, but also about justice and creating the world we want to live in.
THE COSTS: In order to run the project, we have some basic costs we need to cover. The acupuncturists are paid for their work by the members who receive treatment, so that's not what we're asking for. What we need help with is basic supplies, start-up materials like chairs and light blankets, and some support to help us cover the minimal rent we pay for the space we use (not more than $50 for a 3-hour Saturday session, which currently comes out of the acupuncturists' wages, making their compensation not quite adequate or fair for all they do). Here is a sense of what your donations could pay for:
Ongoing Costs:
rent - $50/week, $200/month
3 boxes of needles (1000 needles per box) - $22.50 each
1 two gallon sharps container - $7.00
1 bag vinyl gloves - $1.99
3 bags cotton balls (200 per bag) - $3.19 each
1 box alcohol swabs (100 per box) - $2.99
1 hand sanitizer pump - $2.89
One time costs:
8-12 camping or zero gravity chairs, ranging from $40-$120 each depending on quality
8 eye pillows - $8 each
8-12 lightweight "space blankets" - $14 each
WHAT YOU CAN DO: So we are asking you to give whatever you can. All of your donations will go directly to the operation of the Community Acupuncture Project, and if you'd like to specify an item or items you're most interested in supporting, we'd gladly honor your preference and ensure your funds were spent on that thing. We'd like to establish an account that we can use throughout this next year or more so that we can focus our energies on the work itself. Every dollar you can contribute will make a meaningful contribution toward our ability to do just that. We know these are hard times for everyone and thank you for anything you can spare. As you can see, our costs are simple, so every little bit goes a long way.
OUR VISION: As Rock Doves, let us just close by saying this is among the most inspiring projects we've been a part of in years. The Si Se Puede members are among the best organizers we've ever had the privilege of working with and are creating a real viable model for dignified and sustainable work. And the acupuncturists are talented, generous, and passionate about the healing they are able to offer and all the things they learn in this exchange. We are hoping this is the start of many similar projects, and of a resource we can make available to the entire Sunset Park community with your support for the long haul.
HOW TO GIVE: We've tried to make it very easy. Just go to paypal's homepage and select "send money" or follow this link:
Rock Dove PayPal Link and type in danielle@rockdovecollective.org as the recipient for whatever you're able to give.
Please click personal (not purchase) and select the "money is sent as a gift" option. If you don't already have a paypal account, registration is simple, quick, easy and free. If you'd rather not use paypal and you'd prefer to send a check, just send an email to danielle@rockdovecollective.org and we'll gladly give you the info for where to send it.
And finally, OUR THANKS. Thank you for your steadfast support of our vision over the past four years of Rock Dove's work, and for anything you can offer to make this project possible and sustain it. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at danielle@rockdovecollective.org.
Be well.
With much respect,
The Rock Dove Collective

Event to Support Healthy, Natural Birth in Mexico
Help women access healthy, natural childbirth!! Join us for an evening with our dear friend Cristina Alonso, Midwife and Director of the Luna Maya Birth Center in Chiapas, Mexico.
Help us continue to work with women to empower, protect and respect mothers' ability to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
As many of you know, Luna Maya Birth center has been providing Midwifery and holistic health care services in the Highlands of Chiapas since 2005. In 2008 we attended 62 births, maintaining a 5% cesarean rate. Additionally, we provided pediatric care, acupuncture, homeopathy, free childbirth education, infant massage and well woman care and yoga classes to over 200 families in the area.
Mexico continues to sustain not only some of the highest Cesarean rates (ranging from 40 to 99%) but also continues to practice obsolete obstetric rituals in overcrowded, understaffed, dangerous, and under supplied hospitals. Within a context of poverty and violence, Luna Maya continues to be the only place where women can receive woman-centered care based on choice, informed consent and evidence based care. We provide care on a sliding scale and 20% of the women we attend live in shelters and cannot pay for services. We believe that healthy birth is a human right, that all women should be able to access it, and that humanized birth services can help women transform the cycles of violence in their lives.
We need your help! In order to continue to provide subsidized care we need others to support our work. Our annual budget is $60,000, of which 40% is covered by income generated for services. That means that in order to continue to provide subsidizes services we need to raise $36,000.
We know that these are times of scarcity for everyone, but we also know that abundance comes to those who share it! It costs us $15 a month to provide free prenatal care for a woman. $450 pays the cost of one natural,
woman-centered birth.
Help us to continue to welcome the babies of Chiapas into loving arms, in safety, serenity and consciousness.
Join us at our Brooklyn fundraiser on Monday, March 16 beginning at 6:30pm at Suzanne's house at 383A Sixth Street (between 5th and 6th Aves) in Park Slope. We will be providing snacks and refreshments and will hold a raffle for beautiful handicrafts from Chiapas. Donations are Tax Deductible through M.I.R.A. (Midwives for Research and Action), our sister 501 (c)3. Suggested donation at the door will be $20 and raffle tickets will be on sale for $7-10 each. If you are unable to contribute the suggested amount, please consider bringing a couple of friends who can collectively donate the suggested $20. No one will be turned away!
Any questions? Call Suzanne at (718) 788-1005 or Danielle at (646) 244-5889.
If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation to Luna Maya directly through paypal or by sending a check beforehand. Your donation will make a difference!
You can view details about the event, a map of the location, and RSVP here: http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?inviteId=KMNXIBNCRFZXDYXZBFJL

A Skillshare Presented by Mike Duncan, in partnership with the Rock Dove Collective
Saturday, Dec. 6 @ 2pm
The Brecht Forum - Library
Opioids are powerful medicine for pain that have a significant potential for risk of fatal overdose. While heroin users are the stereotypical victims of opioid overdose, prescription pain medicine such as Vicodin, Percocet, and Oxycontin in fact cause the majority of opioid overdoses. Participants will learn how to recognize and respond to overdoses, including the use of the opioid antidote Naloxone. This will be placed in the context of looking at harm reduction as a radical-friendly approach to dealing with the personal and social consequences of drug use and as a larger political movement for autonomy and social justice.
Please RSVP to rockdovecollective@riseup.net if you plan to attend. The Brecht Forum is located at 451 West Street in Manhattan, between Bank and Bethune Streets. Near to the A/C/E and 1 trains.

Open Meeting & Herbal Skillshare!
The Rock Dove Collective is pleased to invite you to two exciting events coming up on the same day. On SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, join us from 2-4PM for an OPEN MEETING to learn more about Rock Dove and how to get involved. Come meet your local radical community health collective, learn about our work building a directory of free and low cost services around NYC, hear about our fabulous providers (and maybe meet some of them) and all the
services they offer, talk about how to get this world well, and figure out how to contribute to our work.
...then stay for the next installment of our Herbal Wellness Series with Jacoby Ballard...
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 4-6PM Beating Heart, Nourishing Blood: Herbs for the Circulatory System
This is an interactive popular education workshop about the circulatory system and how to nourish and rehabilitate it holistically. This is for anyone who has a history of heart imbalances or struggles in the family, anyone with autoimmune illnesses, and also for people who simply want to be healthier. We will begin by learning about the heart and what it needs, as well as figuring out what the blood does for the body. We will learn about the herbs and foods to care for the system under different conditions, and conclude by making a medicine that you can bring home to
use for yourself and loved ones. Please bring a SMALL GLASS container (baby food jars work great!).
About Jacoby: Jacoby Ballard is a Brooklyn-based community organizer, herbalist, and yoga teacher. He attended the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine in 2004 and has since studied with Robin Rose Bennett, an
herbalist in New Jersey. He currently organizes with the Northeast Radical Healthcare Network, who put on the annual Northeast Grassroots Community Herbal Convergence, intersecting holistic healthcare and progressive politics. Jacoby's favorite herb of the season is burdock and dandelion, from which makes a weekly root tea.
DIRECTIONS & RSVP: Both the meeting and skill share will be held in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, near Eastern Parkway & Underhill. Please RSVP to rockdovecollective@riseup.net for the exact address and directions, and
please let us know if you plan to attend the Open Meeting, Skill Share, or both.

Consensus, Facilitation & Liberation
Facilitators: Autumn Brown, Stephen McFarland, & Carter Klenk
2-DAY WORKSHOP at The Brecht Forum
10:00 am - 5:00pm Saturday and Sunday
The consensus process is much more than a decision-making tool. It is a creative process which synthesizes the raw materials and ideas each of us brings to group work. It is a radical method through which we can confront power and reject the outmoded hierarchical forms of group work we are used to participating in.
This workshop focuses on consensus as a revolutionary and liberating practice, exploring its potential as an organizing tool through group discussions, storytelling and games. We look at consensus decision making as a cyclical process, providing a framework for what is often an abstract experience and revealing the flexibility inherent in the structure. In learning the tools used in consensus group work and the individual roles and responsibilities within the process, we come to a deeper understanding of consensus mechanics. We also focus on the specific role of facilitation in the consensus process. Through shared experience, hands-on training, and challenging exercises, we arrive at a deeper understanding of what it means to facilitate the consensus process, what the possibilities and pitfalls of this role are, and what tools are available to empower the facilitator and create a culture of co-facilitation in a group.
This workshop is open to anyone who desires to learn about consensus, or fine-tune the knowledge one already has. It is open to anyone who desires to communicate more openly and work more creatively with others. For more information about training, or the trainers, contact autumnmeghan@gmail.com.
Sliding Scale: $15-$35 per day No One Turned Away
